Sheena Jamieson, the illustrious Support Services Co-Ordinator at the Youth Project’s provincial office in Halifax, has graciously shared her favourite books about gender expression and gender identity with us. Whether you’re a teen looking for main characters you can relate to, a teacher stocking up your shelves, or a parent shopping for a birthday gift, you should find something on the list.
A lot of these are available to borrow from the Halifax Office’s library. They’ve got movies too. They even lend by mail! You can search their whole catalogue, which also includes resources about sexual orientation, here.
One title that’s not listed here is a great resource on the history of gender and sexuality. Transgender Warriors : Making History from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman, was written by Leslie Feinberg in 1997 and is still an invaluable resource if you want to learn where our current ideas come from.
AND! In exciting news, the Valley Youth Project also has our own (small) lending library. You can borrow these books during any drop-in. Check out our catalogue.
Or buy/borrow from your local library. These should get you started. Thanks Sheena!
