Fri June 23: Halifax Queer Prom

The Halifax office of the Youth Project is putting on a Queer Prom again, with no restrictions about whether you’re a student or what school you go to. The theme is Retro 1950s Sock Hop.  “Get your hair slicked back and your poodle skirt on… Come to the sock hop, have a milkshake at Pop & Pop’s Soda Shoppe, and maybe win the hula-hoop dance competition?! Join us for a bigger ballroom this year (!!), so more space to dance, hang out, and even some games to play that celebrate our often-erased queer & trans heroes from history, because queer has always been here!”

LGTBQ+ youth and allies are all welcome, and the Valley Youth Project will be providing free transportation.  Note that, unlike VYP drop-in, this event is for ages 19 and under.

EVENT DETAILS

  • Friday, June 23rd, 8pm – 11pm
  • Atlantica Hotel, Halifax
  • $5
  • Ages 19 and under

LEGAL STUFF

  • If you’re 17 or under, you need a permission form — see below!
  • If you’re 18 or older and you’re joining us for the ride, you need ID to get on the bus — see below!
  • Drug and alcohol free
  • Security will be present
  • Chaperones include YP staff, as well as other supportive volunteer adults

GETTING THERE

We will meet at the Louis Millett Community Centre at 6:30PM.  We expect to be back at the LMCC by 12:30AM.  If someone will be picking you up at the LMCC, you can tell them to meet you there at 12:30 that night.  If you would like to use VYP transportation to get from the LMCC to your home, your return time will be as soon after that as we can get you there.

If you would like to join us on the VYP bus to Halifax, just use the regular Transportation Request form, any time until Wed, June 14.  Make sure to let us know if we are picking you up at home or at the LMCC.

If you want to make your way there on your own, of course that’s great too.

Important Note!

To get on the bus, you MUST have either:

  • ID stating that you are 18 or older OR
  • A consent form from a parent or guardian

This is different from regular Valley Youth Project drop-in — and one of the only times we will ask to see ID.  You will not be required to show ID to anyone except VYP volunteers.  We understand that the name on your ID may not be the one you go by — we will do our best to make this as painless as possible, including only using the name you ask us to use.

You’re welcome to bring your fancy duds and change at the dance — an entire section of the hotel, including washrooms, is reserved.

As always, your contact info is 100% confidential. Make sure to give us a phone or email address where we can leave a message — we need contact info for each person attending in case of last-minute changes.

PERMISSION FORM

If you are 17 or under, you will also need a consent form that must be signed by a parent/guardian.  We can email you the form if you let us know in the comments; or, you can download and print it.  You can scan and email it back to us, or just bring it with you.

If your parent or guardian is dropping you off at the LMCC, we’ll have extras that they can sign right there and then.

Let the fun begin!

Last chance for prom transportation

If you’re thinking of joining us for the Queer Prom in Halifax next Wednesday, and you need transportation, don’t forget to sign up!  All requests have to be received by the end the day this Friday.  We can pick you up and drop you off from home, the LMCC, or any other place that works for you in Hants, Kings, or Annapolis Counties.

Of course, you’re also welcome to make your own way there. The Valley Youth Project contingent will be strong!

Aaaannnnnd… if you’re still looking for more after the Wolfville Pride Events, there are all kinds of things happening in Halifax.

Sadly, unlike in previous years, the Valley Youth Project will not be providing transportation to the parade!  This year, our volunteers have scheduling conflicts, so we won’t be organizing a van.  HOWEVER!  The Halifax Youth Project is decorating a float, and all youth 25 and under and invited to take part. If you want to ride the float or dance your way through the parade in style with other YP kindred spirits, meet at the Halifax office (2281 Brunswick) at noon on July 26, OR head to the marshalling area and hop on there.  You’ll see them… it will say “Youth Project” on the side in big letters.

Want to connect with other Valley youth to meet up, or carpool?  Use the VYP Facebook page to keep in touch.
